About the Travel Exhibit Program

Hmong Museum is developing a 400 square feet traveling exhibit around the importance of Hmong’s oral culture. This is the planning phase of the exhibition with collaboration between Hmong Museum’s exhibition team and community members. Topics would include Hmong stories that are passed on including history narratives, skills that are taught orally, and folktales. It will also provide an opportunity for visitors of all backgrounds to be inspired to share their own stories about their lives and experiences. 

Position: Advisor

Description

Hmong Museum is seeking eight (8) advisors from the community to be part of the planning phase. Through guided meetings, Advisors will contribute their expertise and vision for a traveling exhibit that will tour schools, libraries, museums throughout the state of Minnesota. Advisors will have the opportunity to brainstorm the direction of the exhibit, be the first to see interactive ideas and exhibition drawings, and provide feedback.

Advisors are required to meet four (4) times throughout the year; each meeting is two hours. Meetings will be held virtually at this time. Each advisor will receive a stipend of $100 after each meeting for a total of $400.

 

Responsibilities

  • Attend all four required meetings. These meetings can be subject to change depending at Advisor group discretion.

  • Respond to Hmong Museum exhibition team in a timely manner
  • Be a reliable partner to the project
  • Provide ideas, feedback, and advise
  • Willingness to share knowledge and participate in discussions
  • Read labels and review drawings and provide feedback

Requirements

  • Undergraduate, graduate students and/or recent graduate students
  • Ability to work between 5-15 hours a week
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently
  • Ability to travel to various locations within the St. Paul and Minneapolis area

Qualifications

  • Have a passion in preservation and sharing of Hmong culture, traditions, and history
  • Be creative and and works well in a team
  • Expertise or connections in areas of history, folk arts skills, and other Hmong related

Position: Artist (Mural)

Location: Minnesota – Twin Cities
Type: Contract
Compensation: $1,200

Description

Hmong Museum is seeking an artist to create an artistic rendition of a Hmong folktale, story, or imagination of a Hmong world. The subject will be determined by the exhibition team.  This person will have the opportunity to be part of an exhibition team that creates a traveling exhibit for schools, libraries, and museums. The artist will attend advisor and exhibition meetings. Then create an initial drawing and a final drawing after feedback. The drawing will be a reference for the final art piece on a 6 feet high x 20 feet length wall of the exhibition to be created next year. The final 6 x 20 feet piece is not part of this contract; it will be a separate project slated for next year.

Position: Graphic Designer

Description

Hmong Museum is a graphic designer to communicate the look and feel of the exhibit and layout of each panel. This person will have the opportunity to be part of an exhibition team that creates a traveling exhibit for schools, libraries, and museums.  The graphic designer will attend preliminary meetings with advisors and the Hmong Museum exhibition team to learn about design needs. Then create a drawing of the exhibition layout, panels, and final print files. At the end of the project the graphic designer will present the work to the Hmong Museum board, advisors, and exhibition team.

Position: Researcher

Compensation: $20/hour, 20 hours per week

Description

Hmong Museum is seeking two (2) researchers who will write copy for the exhibition. Researchers will have the opportunity to be part of an exhibition team that creates a traveling exhibit for schools, libraries, and museums. Researchers will attend quarterly Advisor meetings, weekly meetings with the exhibition manager, researching Hmong history and topics, and exhibition labels. The second part of the research is to collect, record, and organize oral histories and stories from elders.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
