William Lee shares his experiences as a young, Hmong soldier defending the mountains of northern Loas. As part of the SGU, his team was responsible for placing landmines to disrupt the enemy line. He tells of how Hmong on both sides fought and died.

William Lee started as a soldier in 1959. His older brothers had already signed up before him. As the communists began to encroach on Hmong villages and their homes, there weren’t very many options except to take up arms and try to protect their land.
